People who have risen above the severe tides of adversities are life’s warriors. The scars of their battles bear the witness of their triumphs. These categories of people are better able to provide comfort to others experiencing pain or loss. They encourage and show others how to draw strength to withstand the pressure and pain of their present circumstance.

The loss of a loved one, relationship disappointment, accident that caused permanent physical disability, loss of a source of income and some unexpected bad turnarounds can throw any individual off balance. These bad occurrences negatively impact the emotionally and psychologically wellbeing of such individuals. These impacts may very well have rippling damaging effects in other areas of life as well.

    When people make plans for the future, they do so with the hope that the steps they will take in the future would lead to an expected and calculated end. An unpleasant, unforeseen change may thwart their already made plans. In the cases of these overwhelming losses or damages, some people lose stability and balance. Some temporarily, others permanently.

    Some people whom life dealt unexpected, unpleasant blows had safety nets on which to fall into. Safety nets count as support of friends and loved ones while some others are just not as fortunate to have such safety nets.

    Some people experienced the harshness of life alone. Because they don’t have families or friends that they could draw strength from in the times of their trials and travails.

    It’s always tough to initially handle loss or disappointment because the loss of anything, i.e. goals, plans, employment, or loved one, leaves individuals with a rollercoaster of an emotional downturn. Going through grievous times is painful and tumultuous, especially when an unexpected and unforeseen situation arises without notice.

    After the initial shock from loss is experienced, there is often aftermath. This aftermath depends on the decision of the affected persons. The emotional strength and desire to move on with life are key factors. Moving on with life could range from making new decisions, creating an alternative source of income different from the previous one, going through physical training to relearn the use of a body part, finding romantic love again etc. The decision to start all over again requires a certain level of resilience and tenacity which one may struggle to maintain.

    This brings us to the strength that a support system can or would provide.

On the contrary, it is strength and wisdom. When an individual is weak emotionally, he/she would need others who could help him/her navigate the healing process.

    It’s best to begin this journey with others who would hold your hands and applaud you as you learn to walk again (literally or figuratively).

    Leaning on others in the journey to wholeness is not just wise but very soothing and necessary. The support system would not only help one emotionally or psychologically, but it would also provide a place of refuge and succour.

    With a support system, the strength to take the journey to a place of wholeness is almost guaranteed.

    Having a deep meaning to existence often comes from tenacity and resilience of holding on to hope and faith.

    Maturity, higher purpose, fresh meaning, newer perspectives to life are some of the trade-offs and outcomes of uncomfortable circumstances that individuals can have.

    The process of re-discovery or re-inventing one’s self, is the gift that such persons should later share with the world. People who have been through rough patches in life, and overcame, always have the message of hope to share with those who might be passing through same.

    Messages of encouragement from one who had been through hardships resonates more with those who might be passing through the same.

    People who have surmounted grave odds in life and have come out victorious at the end often have very beautiful souls and understanding heart.

    A heart and mind to understand others and show empathy. Often, acting as a hand to hold onto when others have a hard time coping with unexpected changes and pains. They encourage those going through hard times that they have what it takes to rise from low points to become the best that they can be.

    Often, those who have been through adversities and have overcome them are best able to show empathy, love, understanding, and compassion to other. At the point when they become care-givers, they often understand why they went through what they went through.
